Teresa Njoroge

Teresa founded Clean Start after being wrongly imprisoned with her then 3-month-old daughter. Her firsthand experience and the plight of women in prison together with their children, inspired her to commit her life purpose to supporting hundreds of women living prison to successfully reintegrate back into society.

Since 2015 when she registered Clean Start as a social enterprise, she has been steering social-economic transformation and social justice reforms in Kenya and across the African continent through strategic leadership. Recipient of the African Female Leader 2018 Excellence Award by The Global Thinkers Forum, UK.

In 2018 Women and Girls Lead Global recognized Clean Start’s efforts as outstanding advocates for marginalized groups.

Teresa received the Head of State Commendation (HSC), in the Presidential Trailblazer Award 2022-Republic of Kenya, for her efforts to re-integrate formerly imprisoned persons. She also received the Diversity and Inclusion Award 2022 for promoting human rights by Diar Awards and was featured among the top 50 women in development in Africa by Donors Africa. Awarded the prestigious 2023 Elevate Prize in recognition of her work with formerly incarcerated women.
